The London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) was a benchmark interest rate at which banks made short term loans to one another. Scandals surrounding LIBOR and questions around its validity as a benchmark rate resulted in it being phased out and replaced by SONIA (Sterling Overnight Index Average) .
